This week is artist week in my classroom! At the beginning of the week, each student selects a photograph of a scene of daily life in a Spanish-speaking country. I scour the internet for photographs, print them out, and let them choose their favorite. Then, each day we learn about a different artist. This year we are learning about José Guadalupe Posada (Mexico), Pablo Picasso (Spain), Joan Miró (Spain), and Fernando Botero (Colombia).
The students get a blank piece of white paper at the beginning of the week which they fold into 4 boxes. After we learn about each artist, they draw a version or interpretation of their photo through the eyes of that artist. At the end of the week, they have an original photograph and 4 very different versions of the photograph in the style of the various artists that we learned about.
I love this activity because it really forces them to apply what they learn about each artist, not just spit back biographical information. It is also a project that can be adapted to any level of language learner. You can even complete the same project with the same group of kids at a later time and just change your artists.
Here is a link to the information and visuals I am sharing for each artist this year:

After my students finish their projects this Friday I will post some examples for you all to see!
