I finally had the time this summer to pour through the ACTFL progress indicators for Novice-Mid language learners and create an assessment that addresses each and every one of them. I plan to administer this assessment to my Spanish II students at the beginning, midpoint, and end of the school year to demonstrate growth. I will be able to use the data from my pre-test to inform my instruction for the first half the school year, and the data from my midpoint test to inform my instruction for the second half of the year.
The other problem this assessment will hopefully solve for me is what to do about students who want to enter the second year of Spanish after studying the language at a private school or out of state. Before deciding on the correct placement for them, I will see how they do on this assessment. If they do well, I will place them in Spanish 2. If they struggle, I will recommend them for Spanish I.
Here is the assessment I developed:
Spanish Proficiency and Placement Test: Novice-Mid
Spanish Proficiency and Placement Test: Novice-High
