We decided to try a new twist on speaking and created a life-sized board game for our classroom! First, we identified what we needed to be able to do and settled on these 5 things:
1. Be able to invite someone to do something or go somewhere
2. Politely accept an invitation
3. Set a meeting time and place
4. Politely reject an invitation
5. Make excuses as to why we can't do something or go somewhere
The purpose of our board game was to practice doing these 5 things. Next, I designed all the spaces, which was the most time consuming part of the process. Once that was done, it was just a matter of laminating them, laying them out, and taping them to the floor. It took me about 20 minutes to laminate 50 spaces on my home laminator. If you have access to lamination in your school building it may take even less time. Set up time was about 10 minutes to lay out the spaces and tape them down with a tape gun.
So here are some of the types of spaces that I created:
Q&A Spaces - player asks the question and their group must answer appropriately in a complete sentence in Spanish
Gol Spaces - reach all 4 goals to win
Tira de Nuevo - Roll again
Action Spaces - Group must perform an action like rejecting an invitation, accepting an invitation or making an excuse
Avanza - move forward the specified number of spaces
Regresa - move backwards the specified number of spaces
Here is what our board looked like all put together. I actually travel to two different school buildings each day so I set it up twice. The way the game is designed, the board can be set up to match any classroom set up or size.
I knew my students would like this, but it actually went even better than I thought. Everyone has that one class, and I was worried about how mine would handle a game. They were so focused and into it that we had a great class! Best part by far is that I KNOW my kids have met the goals that we set and that we are ready to move onto our interpersonal speaking skits next week!
If you don't want to spend the time designing your own game, I am working on a new line of products based on this idea to do that part for you. First out will be a GIANT Spanish Board Game focusing on Basic Questions in Spanish. Check it out HERE!
